NOS in Health and Social Care
The Health and Social Care National Occupational Standards (NOS) are jointly owned by all the alliance partners within Skills for Care and Development and Skills for Health. The standards are comprised of core units which are common to all practice and augmented by a large number of additional units which reflect specialist areas of work. They have been in use in Northern Ireland since 2005. Qualifications based on them are currently available at NVQ levels 2,3 and 4 and they are the practice-based qualifications which the DHSSPS currently recommends for non-professional workers in social care. An incremental review of these standards was completed in 2008 to ensure the standards continue to meet employment needs and the challenges of the emerging regulatory arrangements for the health and social care workforce. This has resulted in minor corrections to deal with necessary legislative, policy and practice adjustments. The revised standards will be available shortly. The 2005 standards and supporting information are available to download below.
