Conduct - Introduction
NISCC is improving standards in social care and increasing protection for people using social care services by registering the Northern Ireland social care workforce and regulating standards in their conduct, practice and training. Registration demonstrates a social care worker’s commitment to being suitably trained, professional in their practice and accountable for the work they do. Registered social care workers must agree to abide by the NISCC Code of Practice for Social Care Workers, which sets out the standards of conduct and practice expected of them and informs people who use social care services, employers and the public about the standards they can expect.
Service users, social care workers and employers can be confident that when a social care worker brings the profession into disrepute by providing poor practice, or by behaving inappropriately, they will be investigated by the NISCC. All cases will be investigated robustly and fairly, according to the NISCC Conduct Rules. In cases where a serious breach of the codes has taken place and a registered worker is found to be unsuitable for work in social care, the NISCC may remove them from the Social Care Register.
NISCC does not investigate general employment issues such as sickness, timekeeping or matters relating to the level of service offered. Complaints about social care services should be directed to the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority which regulates and reviews social care services in Northern Ireland.
