NISCC welcomes positive response to registration roll out

Almost 800 social care workers in domiciliary care and day care settings have applied to join the NISCC register since this phase of registration opened in September. NISCC’s Registration Team has been holding information workshops to help social care workers complete their NISCC registration, visiting staff and employers at a number of Health and Social Care Trusts as well as the voluntary and independent sector. The information workshops will continue to take place during 2015 and 2016. In addition, NISCC has produced ‘How To Register’ information packs which are being distributed to employers to help their staff understand and complete the registration process. These documents can also be downloaded from the NISCC website.

More than 23,000 social care workers, including social workers, are already registered with NISCC. Compulsory registration for the remaining groups will bring an estimated 12,000 additional workers onto the NISCC Register.

Colum Conway, NISCC Chief Executive said:
“Registration of this diverse part of the social care workforce is challenging but we have been encouraged by how the sector has embraced the process; with almost 800 new social care workers applying to the NISCC register already. Registration and regulation provides an opportunity to raise standards of learning and practice right across the sector. The continuing development of a social care workforce equipped with the skills and practice standards to deliver quality services is a key element of the vision to establish a safe, sustainable and resilient social care service in Northern Ireland.”

The launch of the phased rollout of compulsory registration of the remainder of the social care workforce was announced by Health Minister Simon Hamilton in June this year. Compulsory registration means that social care workers practising in domiciliary care, adult day care and supported living services will need to be registered with NISCC.

• It is anticipated that the registration process for all groups will be completed by 31 March 2017.
• Registration should be completed online on the NISCC online portal at:
