This seminar showcases a Northern Ireland first — bringing together cancer care and mental health services under a social work-led model of psychosocial support delivered by the Macmillan/MindWise Psychosocial Team.
The session presented by Brian Crossan, Tina Millar, and a lived experience member in the Macmillan/MindWise Psychosocial Team will explore how psychosocial interventions help individuals and families navigate the emotional, social, and practical challenges of a cancer diagnosis. A central feature of the team’s approach is the Falkov (2012) Family Model, which recognises the impact of cancer across the whole family system and ensures holistic, relational support at every stage of care.
Presenters will outline the team’s referral pathways, the range of supports available, and the value of multidisciplinary collaboration across oncology and mental health services. Practical examples will illustrate the real-world impact of timely, integrated psychosocial care.
