I wanted to be like the social worker I had

“I always felt supported and listened to. I remember thinking, I want to be like her. I want to do what she does for others.”

Having spent much of her childhood in care, Desiree Groogan knows first-hand the impact a supportive social worker can have on a young person’s life. Inspired by the professionals who stood beside her through some of her most challenging moments, she has recently graduated as a social worker and is now helping other young people build brighter futures.

From care experience to social worker

At just 21 years old, Desiree has overcome challenges that many people never face over a lifetime. Having spent years in kinship care and foster care, becoming a young mother at 15 and balancing education with parenting responsibilities, she credits the support of social workers, foster carers, teachers and other professionals with helping her achieve her goals.

Finding stability through support

Originally from Dungannon, Desiree entered kinship while still in primary school before moving into foster care. Over the years she experienced several placements before eventually settling with a foster family who would provide long-term stability and support.

“Every social worker I had was always looking at how they could make things better for me. They listened to us, advocated for us and made sure we had the support we needed.”

A turning point

Becoming a mum at such an early age, Desiree feared her ambitions would be out of reach.

“I genuinely thought my life was over. I worried about what people would think of me and I didn’t know what the future would look like.”

Instead of giving up on her education, Desiree found herself surrounded by people who believed in her potential. Her foster family, social workers and support services helped her continue her studies and prepare for the future.

Inspired by a social worker

One social worker in particular had a lasting impact on Desiree and helped shape the career path she would eventually choose.

“I always felt supported and listened to. I remember thinking, I want to be like her. I want to do what she does for others.”

Achieving her goals

Determined to create opportunities for herself and her son, she completed her GCSEs during the Covid-19 pandemic whilst being a mum, before progressing to A-Levels and eventually securing a place to study social work through South West College and Ulster University. Today, she has graduated with a Degree in Social Work and is working with the Youth Justice Agency, supporting young people aged between ten and 17.

For Desiree, one of the most rewarding aspects of social work is being able to build meaningful relationships with young people and help them feel heard.

“I love being able to advocate for young people and help them feel listened to. Sometimes young people just need somebody to believe in them.”

Looking for the future

Now living independently with her five-year-old son, Desiree is beginning the next chapter of her life and career. Her journey demonstrates how positive relationships, encouragement and belief can help people overcome significant challenges and build successful futures.

“Anybody can do anything. There were times when I never thought I’d get here, but I did. Your experiences can become your strengths. No matter your background or circumstances, if social work is something you’re passionate about, go for it.”
