Belfast Met lecturer invited to the World Conference on Social Work held in Panama

The Northern Ireland Social Care Council (the Social Care Council) shares insights about a recent global conference where Northern Ireland’s work to combat homelessness as part of social work education was presented.

Homelessness advocate Gerry Skelton MBE sent a report from the Joint World Conference on Social Work, Education and Social Development (the Joint Conference) 2025, held in Panama. The Joint Conference, organised by the International Federation of Social Workers, International Association of Schools of Social Work, and the International Council on Social Welfare, centered around the theme ‘Respecting Diversity Through Joint Social Action.’

Gerry Skelton is a relentless campaigner for marginalised groups in Northern Ireland, particularly those experiencing homelessness. He is also known for supporting the Homelessness Awareness Panel. Mr Skelton was asked to present at the global conference as part of a select group of speakers from around the world, due to the local, national, and international impact of his work by the Joint Conference.

Mr Skelton’s presentation was title: ‘Of no fixed abode: An ecological approach to homelessness in social work education, training and practice (Northern Ireland)’.

Reflecting on the experience, he said:

“I was honoured, flattered, excited, and absolutely delighted to be invited as a speaker to this prestigious World Social Work event. It is not often in one’s career that such opportunities are offered and I’m proud that I was able to represent Northern Ireland social work on the global stage. I have given a lot of personal and professional time, energy, and attention to ensuring social work takes homelessness seriously, and this fabulous invitation was a vindication of my work and efforts.”

Following the event, the Joint Conference Organising Committee expressed their appreciation:

“On behalf of the Joint World Conference on Social Work, Education and Social Development, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for your participation in this event. Your presence made the occasion truly special and memorable.”

Declan McAllister, Chief Executive of the Social Care Council, added:

“Gerry’s contribution to homelessness advocacy and social work education has been nothing short of transformative. His invitation to speak at the Joint Conference is a well-deserved recognition of his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment. We were proud to host and share his work and to help amplify his message to a wider audience.”
