It’s World Social Work Day – Social Care Council CEO message to NI’s social workers

19 March 2024

World Social Work Day is an annual celebration that aims to shine a spotlight on the achievements of social work and its value for individuals, families and communities, particularly during uncertain and challenging times. This year’s theme is “Buen Vivir: Shared Future for Transformative Change.”

World Social Work Day highlights the important role social workers play in improving the lives of people in Northern Ireland and around the world. Safe, effective and innovative practice is an important part of that. I would like to acknowledge your professionalism and leadership as a workforce within the health and social care system, and the significant contribution that each of you make to ensure that the work you do transforms our communities and the lives of individuals for the better.

On behalf of the Social Care Council I would like to extend our thanks and gratitude for the work you do and to encourage you to take time to celebrate your work and your achievements on this special day.

Finally, I would encourage you to view our new social work stories page, featuring stories about our inspirational social workers, and I would encourage anyone who wants to help make a difference in people’s lives to consider a career in social work.

Happy World Social Work Day!

Patricia Higgins
Chief Executive
Social Care Council
