Review of employer supervision policies and practices for the social care workforce, February 2026 - new surveys available

16 February 2026

Regular supervision provides social care practitioners with the opportunity to reflect on their work, ensuring that their practice remains safe, effective, and competent.

The Northern Ireland Social Care Council (the Social Care Council) are undertaking a review of social care employer supervision policy and practice across the statutory and independent sectors.

The aims of this project will be to identify best practice, gaps, enablers, barriers and risks to inform a sector-wide approach, in collaboration with employers, social care practitioners, supervisors, professional bodies and other relevant stakeholders.

This review involves:

  • Scoping and mapping the current supervision policies and practice across social care sectors and settings in Northern Ireland.
  • Identifying the minimum standards and core components of effective supervision (structure, frequency, records, quality assurance).
  • Engagement with employers, social care practitioners and professional bodies to explore the current supervision policies, practice and needs of the social care workforce in Northern Ireland.
  • Identifying the enablers and barriers for/to the possible implementation of a standardised regional supervision policy.

As part of this review, the Social Care Council are carrying out surveys to gather information on your experience of supervision within social care.

This following surveys are for social care practitioners and line managers, and employers in all sectors and settings across Northern Ireland.

Your honest input is essential. We need a true picture of what support and supervision genuinely looks like for you now, not ideal versions.

We would really appreciate if you could take 10 minutes to complete the 12 short questions in this survey.

All responses are anonymous and no individual or service will be identifiable in the feedback reports.
