No place for racism and violence…Diversity in health and social care is our strength
The Northern Ireland Social Care Council (the Social Care Council) has published a statement voicing its support for the social work and social care workforce in light of the recent racist, anti-immigrant, unlawful and violent scenes on our streets.
The Social Care Council and our staff stand against racism and oppression in all its forms. Everyone living and working in Northern Ireland has the right to do so without fear or intimidation.
Social workers and social care practitioners are critical to the delivery of care across health and social care services, as well as in justice and education. They work in our care homes and in our communities from early in the morning until late at night to provide services to our most vulnerable citizens.
Diversity in social work and social care is our strength.
Aine Morrison, Chief Social Worker, Department of Health, said:
“The violent scenes we have witnessed in recent days are nothing short of shameful. Social care and social work colleagues who may be feeling anxious by what is happening, please know that you have my full support, and the full support of the entire health and social care family.
“We stand against racism in all its forms. It is the antithesis of the values of inclusion, equality, and respect for all that our social care practitioners, social workers, and indeed all HSC staff, hold dear. You live by these values every day as you go about your vital work across all communities in Northern Ireland. You make a lasting difference to some of the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society, regardless of background or culture, and we are deeply proud of and appreciate your work.
“I would encourage any social worker or social care practitioner who is feeling worried at this time to please speak to their employer and seek support.”
We support recent statements by the Health Minister and Department of Health and share their commitment to creating a culturally safe workplace for all.
