The Muckamore Abbey Hospital Inquiry report is now published. The Inquiry examined the abuse of patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital and the failures across the health and social care system.
As the regulator of the social work and social care workforce in Northern Ireland we take our responsibility to protect the public with the utmost seriousness and are appalled at the abuse that took place at Muckamore Abbey Hospital.
We have now received the full report and are reviewing its findings carefully, including any recommendations that impact social work and social care workforce regulation.
We wish to say clearly and without reservation: our first thoughts today are with the survivors and families who experienced abuse. As the report acknowledges they deserved to be safe. They were not, and that is a profound failure of the broader health and social care system.
