One of the priorities of the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (the Social Care Council) is to support the workforce to continue to learn and develop to become safe and effective practitioners.
This month the Social Care Council is shining a spotlight on our dysphagia, dementia and delirium resources. It is important that everyone plays their part in supporting older people’s physical, social, financial, psychological wellbeing and protect them from mistreatment and neglect.
The resources proved key learning for anyone working with adults including older people in the community.
Did you know?
- Delirium is very common and treatable. It is important to be able to recognise and respond effectively.
- There are four different types of dementia each with their own signs and symptoms.
- People living with a dementia are especially vulnerable because the disease may prevent them from reporting abuse or recognising it.
- Up to three quarters of people with swallowing difficulties suffer from dehydration.
- Up to 85% of people living with a dementia experience eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.
- There is targeted swallow aware training for all health and social care staff.
