Degree Courses in NI

The required qualification for social workers, probation officers and education welfare officers in NI is the Honours Degree in Social Work. All of the Degree in Social Work courses are approved and monitored by NISCC. There are a range of options available to study for the Degree:

  • 3 Year Full-time Undergraduate Route (UGR)
  • 2 Year Relevant Graduate Route (RGR)

The Degree is offered at four colleges in NI, all of which are approved quality checked annually by NISCC to deliver social work training. The course is a combination of taught modules and assessed practice. More information about course content is available from the websites below. Queen's University of Belfast (QUB)

QUB offers two routes to the Degree in Social Work:

University of Ulster (Magee Campus) (UUM)

UUM offers two routes to the Degree in Social Work:


Belfast Metropolitan College (BMC)

BMC offers the one route to the Degree in Social Work:

(Year 3 of the course is completed at University of Ulster Magee Campus)


South West College (SWC)

SWC offers the one route to the Degree in Social Work:

(Year 3 of the course is completed at University of Ulster Magee Campus)


Admission requirements for the Degree

Applicants must demonstrate that they have the potential to train to be a Social Worker at degree level - this means they must:

  • Meet academic entry requirements set by their chosen university/institution.
  • Pass a suitability for training to be a social worker interview
  • Be suitable to be registered as a social work student with NISCC.

Criteria is set by the academic institutions and may vary accordingly. Applicants are advised to check with the admissions teams at each institution to confirm current entry requirements for the year they are applying to the Degree.
