Lunchtime seminar - ICT systems that ‘strangle’ relationship-based practice for social workers in Northern Ireland.

The latest Lunchtime Seminar hosted by the Social Care Council is based on the doctoral work of Brian Crossan and Dr Tony McGinn from Ulster University during 2022-2023. It will be presented by Brian, a social work practitioner in the Western Trust with over 20 years of frontline experience in adult, palliative care, and children’s services.

The work details the views of social workers throughout Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland regarding their current ICT and administration systems. This study comes ahead of the anticipated digitalisation of health and social care records in Northern Ireland by the Encompass program.

The seminar will focus on one of the key findings of the study – the multiple barriers within ICT systems that ‘strangle’ relationship-based practice for social workers in Northern Ireland.

The findings of this study will likely resonate strongly with social workers and confirm long-held views on ICT, bureaucracy, and administration in a robust study.

The seminar will cover:

  • Understanding the types of barriers within current systems and how they manifest.
  • Social workers’ responses to the barriers to practice and the threats they pose to relationship-based practice.
  • What might Encompass offer or change for social workers and service users.
  • The role of the social worker in the design and implementation of future systems.
